Antique French Apothecary Mortar

$395.00

Sourced in Avignon, France by Atelier Terrell · Antique · Handmade in France

Dimensions: 12"W x 12"D x 7"H

A piece of French craftsmanship that was made to be used — and has become something beautiful to keep.

Hand-selected in Provence, this early 19th-century French apothecary mortar is carved from richly veined gray marble, with a substantial form and beautifully aged surface. Its distinctive four-lobed shape and gracefully formed pouring spout reflect the thoughtful craftsmanship once found in objects made for everyday use.

Originally used by apothecaries to prepare medicines, botanicals, and other remedies, this mortar carries a quiet connection to another era. Today, its sculptural shape and natural marble make it just as compelling displayed on a kitchen counter, console, or open shelf.

The marble's veining and softly weathered surface give the piece a sense of depth and character that can only come with age. No two areas of the stone are quite alike, and the variations throughout are part of what makes this such a distinctive object.

We chose this mortar because it sits beautifully between function and sculpture. It has a history and purpose of its own, but its form is timeless enough to feel completely at home in a contemporary interior.

Condition: As an antique piece, this mortar is offered in its existing condition and may reflect the passage of time through signs of age, use, and previous handling, including repairs, natural movement, cracks, scratches, small losses, and surface variation. These qualities are part of its character and history rather than considered defects.
